How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

  1. Add your PDF

Drop the document onto the box above, click to browse, or paste it from your clipboard. It opens locally — nothing is uploaded.

  2. Choose position and format

Six positions cover the classics — bottom center or corner for reports, top corner for slides. Three formats: bare numbers, “1 / 10” fractions, or the explicit “Page 1 of 10”.

  3. Set the details

Start numbering anywhere (cover pages often stay uncounted), pick a font size from discreet to bold, and set the margin so numbers clear the printer’s grip edge.

  4. Click “Add page numbers”

Numbers are stamped onto every page on your device. The existing content is untouched — numbers overlay it, they never reflow your text.

  5. Download the result

One click saves the numbered PDF. Your original stays as it was, ready for a different numbering scheme tomorrow.

Why choose our number pdf pages tool?

Six positions, three formats

Bottom or top, left, center or right. Bare digits for clean documents, fractions for manuals, labeled numbers for anything that gets printed and shuffled.

Start anywhere, for real

Title pages, dividers, front matter — set the starting number so page 1 is where the content begins, not where the file begins.

Content untouched, numbers on top

Numbering never reflows your document. Text, tables and images stay exactly where they are; the number is stamped in the margin you chose.

Private by construction

The stamping happens in your browser on a background worker. Contracts, theses, reports — nothing is uploaded, stored, or seen by a server.

Made for print workflows

Margins in millimeters match how printers think, and the numbered output pairs perfectly with our watermark for review copies.

Free, unlimited, no watermark

No account, no daily cap, nothing stamped that you didn’t ask for. Number one document or fifty.

Tips for number pdf pages

  • Numbering a thesis? Start at 1 on the introduction and number front matter separately (roman-style starts are on the roadmap).
  • For documents that get printed double-sided, bottom-center numbers survive binding better than corner ones.
  • Set the margin to at least 10 mm so numbers clear most printers’ unprintable edge.
  • Add a watermark after numbering — the stamp overlays the numbers evenly and both stay readable.
  • Scanned documents number fine too: the stamp lands on the raster image like any other page.

number pdf pages — Frequently asked questions

Will page numbers shift my existing content?

No. Numbers are stamped into the margin you choose — the page content itself is never rescaled or moved. Pick a margin that clears your existing footers and the layout stays exactly as it was.

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Add the file, choose a position and format, set the starting number, size and margin, then click Add page numbers. Every page of a new PDF gets stamped; the original is untouched.

Can I start numbering from a different page?

You can set any starting number, so the first page can be “5” if pages 1–4 are a cover you removed or numbered separately. Skipping specific mid-file pages isn’t supported yet — split, number, and merge for that.

Will numbering move my content?

No. Numbers are stamped as an overlay in the margin area you choose. Your text, images and layout stay byte-identical underneath.

What number formats are available?

Bare digits (“3”), fractions (“3 / 10”) and labeled (“Page 3 of 10”). The labeled format uses Latin words by design — it’s the international convention in most printed documents.

Does it work on rotated or landscape pages?

Yes — the number is placed relative to the page’s own dimensions and keeps reading horizontally, whichever way the content is oriented.

Are my documents uploaded anywhere?

Never. Numbering runs entirely in your browser using a Web Worker. Your file stays on your device the whole time.
